George Cook died on 29 Aug 1890 in Mt Shoobridge, South Australia, at the age of 34 and the registration records, "Sudden death in bush - particulars not reported until this date" (9 Jan 1891).
A newspaper report stated:
“SUDDEN DEATH – On Saturday last information came to town that Mr. G. Cook had died on the previous day. It would seem from inquiry that his death occurred rather suddenly, although for weeks past he had not been in the best of health.
On Friday morning deceased rode into the Howley from Mount Shoobridge, where he lived, in order to meet the arrival of the train and get the mail. He started on his return home in the afternoon, in company with a man named William Blamey, but when they had got a few miles out Cook suddenly took ill as though in a fit. His companion placed him in the shade and took steps to bring him round again, and eventually the deceased expressed a desire to proceed homewards. But when he attempted to mount his horse he found himself helpless, and he was advised to remain where he was until his companion rode back to the Howley for a buggy.
Accordingly Blamey hurried in to Mr Knott’s, procured a vehicle, and returned as quickly as he could; but only to find that the unfortunate man had expired during his absence.
Deceased was a resident of the Territory of long standing and was well known throughout the country districts and to the majority of Palmerstonites, chiefly on account of his connection with the turf. He was at one time the owner of several racehorses imported from the southern colonies, and one of these (No Name) is one of the best colts ever introduced here; but it cannot be said that Mr Cook achieved much success as a racing man.
He was a man about 33 years of age, and he leaves a young wife and two children.”
Report hand dated 5 Sep. 1890, and believed to be from a Palmerston newspaper
and the cause of his death was recorded as Heart Disease.
