He began military service on 1 Oct 1941 in Cowra, New South Wales, and rose to the rank of Sergeant in the 2/4 Australian Armoured Regiment. Service No. NX113874.
William Frederick George Parks died on 16 Aug 1945 at Commo Ridge in North Bouganville at the age of 24 whilst on active service, (two days after Japanese forces surrendered unconditionally) as a result of accident. Lt John B Adamson summarised the event as follows: "We were camped on a site in some open bomb blasted forest, where the jungle had been cleared by high explosive bombing and shelling.
On the night of the 12th Aug. he was sleeping in his pit beside the tank, with his gunner.
At 11.45pm I was awakened by the sentry who told me that Bill had been hurt by a limb falling from a tree near his pit...
He was evacuated shortly after daylight, we could not do it earlier as the outside of the area was heavily booby-trapped against the Jap, and the track back was unsafe on account of enemy patrolling activity... and he passed away on the morning of the 16th.
