SUICIDE.
Yesterday forenoon the police received information that an old man named James Sivyer had committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence, Oakhampton-road, West Maitland. The deceased had been left at the house on Tuesday last by his daughters, who had gone on a visit to some friends.
They returned home yesterday and found their father lying dead on his bed. The body was fully dressed, and an old Enfield rifle was lying beside it. From the position of the weapon it was seen that deceased had fastened a piece of string from the trigger to his foot, and had then placed the gun to his forehead and discharged it. The medical examination showed that death had ensued
on the proceeding day, and had been produced by a charge of gravel which had become embedded in the brain. Deceased, who was 75 years of age, had been drinking recently.
Mr. H. Crothers, acting district coroner, held an inquest at a late hour in the afternoon, and a verdict was returned to the effect that death was due to a gunshot wound self-inflicted whilst Sivyer was temporarily insane.
