He began military service on 19 Jun 1916 and trained at Dubbo from 23 Jun to 24 Aug 1916. He was then transferred to Liverpool from 25 Aug to 7 Oct 1916. He was told that he would not get an immediate posting overseas, due to his Militia commission. He then handed in his commission and was demoted to Private. He embarked Sydney on ‘Ceramic' on 7 Oct 1916 and disembarked in Plymouth 21 Nov 1916.
He was sent to France on ‘Princess Clementine‘ out of Folkstone 28 Dec 1916. He saw active service until he received a gunshot wound to his right upper chest, on 3 May 1917. After hospitalisation in France he was shipped to England on 'Peiter de Comich' where he was admitted to Warren Road Hospital, Guildford. He was transferred from hospital to hospital, until he was classi?ed as A3 and shipped back to France on ‘L'deverill' out of Southhampton on 21 Feb 1918, disembarking at Le Havre 22 Feb 1918.
He then rejoined his Unit, the 17th Battalion, and saw further service at the front. He was wounded in action, receiving gunshot wounds in his left leg and thigh and sadly died of his wounds the next day.
Harry Curno Bailey died on 3 Oct 1918 in the Western Front and it was reported in the 'Daily Observer' of Tuesday 22 Oct 1918: ‘Mr J T Bailey of Griffin St Tamworth received word on Saturday morning that his son, Private Harry C Bailey of the 17th Battalion had died of wounds on Oct 4th. Prior to enlisting, the late Pte Bailey held the rank of Second Lieutenant in C Company, 13 Infantry Battalion and continued to do so while at Narrabri Camp for the A.I.F. When the camp was disbanded, Pte Bailey desiring to get to the front without delay, enlisted as a private and left for the front in 1916. He was well known and popular in the Tamworth district.'
He was buried on 4 Oct 1918 at Tincourt New British Cemetery, Tincourt-Boucly in Somme, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and the headstones in the family plot at Tamworth could be interpreted to indicate that Harry is buried there, however the stone is simply 'in memory of.'
