He began military service on 21 Sep 1914 in the First Field Ambulance of the Australian Infantry Forces, Service No. 194. According to his service record he was not a model soldier and was placed on charge several times during his service. Rockley served on Gallipoli in 1915, and was gassed in October 1917. He returned to Australia on 3 Dec 1918 and discharged on 29 Mar 1919. On 17 June 1919 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery.
