An ambulance got him to the MRD hospital about midnight. He was taken straight to surgery but could not be saved."
He was buried at Killbakh Anglican Cemetery, Comboyne Road in Wingham, New South Wales.

Lt Colonel James Kirkaldy immigrated on 11 Aug 1854 to Melbourne, Victoria, with his parents and twin brother Alexander, settling in Geelong. About a year later the family moved to Newcastle NSW.

He began military service in 1868 at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle, New South Wales, as a Gunner in the Volunteer Artillery, and rose to the Rank of Lt Colonel, in charge of the 3rd Battery by the time of his discharge in 1896.

Lt Colonel James Kirkaldy married Annie Peters on 13 Feb 1875 in Morpeth, New South Wales.

James was an Army officer, who retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel, commanding the 3rd Battery in May 1906 at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle, New South Wales.
James and Annie lived at 27 Union Street in Newcastle West, New South Wales, on 17 May 1918 when a letter from the family was written to the Australian Army.

OBITUARY.
The late Mrs. Annle Kirkaldy, widow of the late Colonel Kirkaldy, whose death occurred at her residence, 'The Bungalow,' James and Murray streets, Hamilton, was a native of Largs. She was 77 years of age, and a daughter of the late Captain Peters, master mariner. She is survived by six daughters and four sons.
The youngest, Lieutenant Raymond Kirkaldy, of the R.F.C., was lost at the front. The deceased lady was much esteemed for her charitable disposition, and was ever ready to give assistance in sickness, For a number of years she took keen interest in Cook's Hill Public School. Tho funeral took place this afternoon.
