      Andrew Laurie Adam was born on 2 Jul 1861 at Bullock Island (Onebygamba), Carrington in Newcastle, New South Wales, and it is believed he was the first white child born on that island.
Andrew was an employee of the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company in 1876.
Andrew was appointed as the first Town Clerk of the newly-constituted Raymond Terrace Council, and when the Port Stephens Shire, (including Raymond Terrace) was incorporated in 1906 he stayed on in his position until 1934 in 1884.

Andrew Laurie Adam married Catherine Bowden, daughter of William Bowden and Caroline Munn, on 11 Aug 1885 at at the home of Mr W Bowden, 'Kennington' in Hexham, New South Wales, and Rev. Charles J. McCoy performed the marriage ceremony.

RAYMOND TERRACE: Tuesday.
The death occurred about 1.30 p.m. today of the late Mr. A. L. Adam, Town Clerk of Raymond Terrace, at the age of 73 years. The late Mr. Adam had been Town Clerk of Raymond Terrace for 50 years, taking office at the inception of the municipality, and was well known throughout the State. He was the ?rst white child born at Carrington, Newcastle and was the son of the late Mr. Thomas Adam, after whom Adamstown, Newcastle is named. Deceased came to Raymond Terrace at an early age, and at his death had the longest service as a town clerk in Australia. Mr. Adam is survived by a grown up family of two sons, Messrs. Cyril (Raymond Terrace) and Cliff Adam (East Maitland) and two daughters Mrs. Fairhall (Newcastle) and Mrs. Nelson (Orange).

Though Mr. A. L. Adam had been ill for some time, the news of his death on Tuesday at about 1.30 p.m. came as a great shock to his family and friends. His passing leaves a blank in the civic affairs of the town and district, as Mr. Adam had been associated with the area since he was 14 years of age, and was closely identified with all its industrial, social and political life ever since he attained manhood. At the age of 23, in I884, he was appointed Town Clerk to the Municipal Council of Raymond Terrace and from that day until Tuesday last, he had given his best services in the interests of the municipality. He was an authority on local government and he actively and publicly identified himself with every movement that had a tendency at all to advance the interests of the town and district. He was always the leading spirit in organising public or private assistance to hospitals, churches or the needs of those requiring benefaction.He came to Raymond Terrace with his father who was one of the pioneers of Newcastle and after whom Adamstown was named. Their business then was saw milling and the mill was located at the foot of Bourke Street.
He was buried at the General Cemetery (Grave location recorded as: Uniting Church Portion, Row A1) in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales.
