Sydney John Lukins was born on 11 Jul 1913 in Paddington, New South Wales, a son of Sydney S. and Eva M. Lukins.
Sydney was a fully-qualified carpenter, later working in the building trade and becoming and foreman and leading hand.

Sydney John Lukins married Marjorie Mitchell, daughter of Albert William V. Mitchell and Fenetta Giggins, in 1946 in Petersham, New South Wales.
Sydney and Marjorie lived at 22 Clermont Avenue in Ryde, New South Wales.

Sydney John Lukins died on 2 Sep 1985 in Sydney, New South Wales, at the age of 72 and the following are extracts from the Eulogy delivered at his funeral:
Early Home Life: He was an only child, born of devout, strict parents. Teenage years – heart of Great Depression, set apattern of carefulness; frugal living; watchfulness concerning every penny spent, so nothing was wasted (improvise)
Master Tradesman: Early schooling completed – opportunity to become carpenter. Apprenticed with AW Edwards – worked there for many years. Later employed by Ted Martin (builder), becoming his foreman and leading hand, serving with him for 25 years. Syd loved his trade. He was a craftsman; every new challenge developed his skill; nothing was considered insurmountable; he was creative; he could and did improvise, putting his hand to make anything he needed. He was honest; reliable; responsible – qualities which assured him of continuous work
Home and Family: In 1946, Syd Lukins married Marjorie Mitchell – a life partnership of great endearment. Before his marriage, Syd had built a caravan which was to serve as their first home while the block of land at 22 Clermont Avenue Ryde, was purchased for the site of their new home, which Syd built and it remained the family home to this present day.
Their four children were the centre of love and pride.
As a father, Syd was firm, but protective; also as a husband he was devoted and patient. By nature he was industrious; worked hard for what he had; thrifty but generous; selfless; thinking of others. One of his outstanding qualities was his devotion and loyalty in the family situation. His wife Marj did not enjoy good health – the pressures of life weighed heavily – she was a worrier – nervous tension proved debilitating. But Syd always displayed patience and concern. Practical help was never lacking. Later Mrs Lukins developed cancer which began to take its toll. It was then that Syd , at the age of 59, retired from work to care for his wife and family. Mrs Lukins died in 1973 and Syd attended her with devotion right to the end.
This same quality of caring was also directed to his mother who needed care, first at home, and then in a nursing home. During the 11 years she was in the La Salette Home (Ryde), Syd would visit every day ( twice a day on weekends) – much of that time, following a stroke, she could not converse – Syd would often feed her and always encourage her.
he family dog, Timmy, was for 18 years Syd’s real pal – followed him everywhere.
When the children met their partners, Syd’s love for them was true – never over- displayed, but deep and genuine – and he beamed with affection and pride for the grandchildren – A great father.
