Earle Desmond Robson, 35, of Hamilton North, was killed in a head-on collision between a tram and his car in Maitland-road, Islington, last night.
Deceased was a married man with a family. Robson was alone in the car.
The impact was severe, and the radiator, bonnet and engine of the car were forced partly under the tram. The whole front half of the car was crushed and crumpled back on the driver, pinning him so that ambulance men and others found it most difficult to release him. He died while Newcastle Ambulance was taking him to hospital.
The front and undercarriage of the tram were damaged, but not extensively. The road was littered with shattered glass.
Robson was an employee of the Greater Newcastle Council. He served with the 35th Battalion, A.I.F., and it was stated last night that he enlisted in his 16th year.
He was buried on 25 Sep 1938 at Sandgate Cemetery (Grave location recorded as: Baptist Portion, Section FNW, Plot 19) in Newcastle, New South Wales.
