James Watman married Elizabeth Caunt on 23 Jun 1855 at St Paul's Church of England in Cobbitty, New South Wales.
James was a Coach Proprietor, as recorded in the Crookwell Gazette: "Mr. James Watman is now running a two-horse coach between Crookwell and Goulburn three times a week" in Crookwell, New South Wales, in Jan 1886. A summary of the life and achievements of James Watman has been located, and it reads as follows:
Watman Coach Service Between Crookwell and Goulburn
By Allan Cole (SAG Member #5767)
As a colonial example of interaction between animals and their involvement in family history, I believe the horses used to pull the coach between Crookwell and Goulburn could be considered as an example. In the nineteenth century, the fastest movement on land was made by animals, mainly horses, though of course cattle were used to haul timber by bullock drays.
The Watman family operated a coach service between Crookwell and Goulburn three times a week, and operated a boarding house in Crookwell. Later they were involved with a livery stable. They hired out transport to take people anywhere in the district but the coach service was a regular operation between Crookwell and Goulburn. It was operated by the Watman family until it was sold at about 1891 to a Mr Alexander McDonell and was superseded later by a spur line of the railway in 1902. The railway continued until 1974.
It was begun by a James Watman who was born on 23rd of October 1835 in Rolvenden, Kent, England and came to New South Wales with his parents James and Elizabeth aboard the “Maitland” in 1838. He married Eliza Caunt on 1st December 1855 in Crookwell, New South Wales. Eliza Caunt had been born in Nottinghamshire, England. and died on the 21st of August 1908.
They came as emigrants, and initially were in the Camden area but later moved to become farmers at Crookwell. This then led to their establishment of a coachline which must have helped open the district to farming practices. An associated family, the Grimson family who originated in Norfolk, operated a blacksmith shop for a time, and later the Watman family operated a livery stable.
