One of Ron's tasks was to liaise with the AIF Forces stationed at the Cowra POW Camp and AIF Training Camp, as the garage was responsible for arranging servicing and repair work on the "Blitz" (Ford) trucks used by the Army at the camps. His occupation was therefore declared to be "protected" and he was not required to enlist for war service.
