William Bowden married Elizabeth Godfrey, daughter of Francis Godfrey and Elizabeth Thrift, on 15 May 1817 in Benenden, Kent.

William was initially secured employment as a messenger for the Supreme Court in Sydney, before setting up a carrying business and living in Bourke Street, Surry Hills.
He lived at Dora Creek, near Lake Macquarie NSW, where William had secured a land grant for timber clearing in 1842. A slab hut was constructed, and the property named "Muddy Creek". The family's days were spent cultivating vegetables and other food crops. The timber had to be manually moved for sale but later a pair of bullocks eased the work.
William lived at "Kennington" in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, in 1856 and disastrous floods in that year totally destroyed the farm and their possessions.
William Bowden died on 6 Jul 1882 at "Kennington" in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, at the age of 85.
He was buried at Pioneer Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Avenue in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales.
