RAYMOND TERRACE: Friday.
Though Mr. A. L. Adam had been ill for some time, the news of his death on Tuesday at about 1.30 p.m. came as a great shock to his family and friends. His passing leaves a blank in the civic affairs of the town and district, as Mr. Adam had been associated with the area since he was 14 years of age, and was closely identified with all its industrial, social and political life ever since he attained manhood. At the age of 23, in I884, he was appointed Town Clerk to the Municipal Council of Raymond Terrace and from that day until Tuesday last, he had given his best services in the interests of the municipality. He was an authority on local government and he actively and publicly identified himself with every movement that had a tendency at all to advance the interests of the town and district. He was always the leading spirit in organising public or private assistance to hospitals, churches or the needs of those requiring benefaction. He came to Raymond Terrace with his father who was one of the pioneers of Newcastle and after whom Adamstown was named. Their business then was saw milling and the mill was located at the foot of Bourke Street.
