He was based at HMAS Lonsdale at the time of his discharge from active service on 4 Aug 1947.

Edmund James Harkness married Marjery Syme, daughter of Leslie Norman Syme and Lillian Adelaide Fairhall, on 11 Nov 1940 in Melbourne, Victoria.
