David Syme immigrated in 1852 to Sydney, New South Wales, after an unsuccessful attempt to find gold in America. From Sydney he caught a steamer to Melbourne and walked to the Castlemaine goldfields thence to Bendigo, Wangaratta, Ballarat and Beechworth, where he had a little success.
On 27 Sep 1856 David and Ebenezer became the joint owners of Melbourne's The Age newspaper.
David Syme married Annabella Johnson in 1858 in Melbourne, Victoria.
In 1860 David became the sole proprietor of The Age following his brother's death. He campaigned for trade protection to build Victoria's industries, and this gained him powerful friends and enemies. Over the following years he also supported agricultural development, early hotel closing, anti-sweatshop legislation and the old age pension. As the move towards Federation gained momentum his newspaper actively supported it.
