The Betts family's ancestors were John and Martha (Crisp) Betts of Suffolk, England. Prior to their immigration to Australia, the family members lived in Essex and Cambridgeshire.
James Betts and his wife Frances (nee Goodchild) arrived in Sydney in 1858 on board the "Castilian" and became farmers in the Kempsey area.
